Cleveland EMS, Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, and Red Cross form Partnership for SafeSitter® Program

The City of Cleveland is partnering with Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and the Red Cross this summer to help give young people the knowledge and skills they need to stay home alone safely and take care of other children.

Today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Michael Zone Recreation Center, youth ages 11-13 participated in Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s SafeSitter® program. Safe Sitter® is a medical based youth development program, designed for babysitters and teen child care providers, to teach skills to keep them safe now and in the future.

It also equips them with the tools needed to stay home alone safely and with confidence.  Safe Sitters will learn: what to do when a child chokes, basic CPR, Safety for the sitter, how to call for emergency help, basic child care skills, how to entertain children and keep them safe and babysitting business skills.

The Division of EMS will conduct additional SafeSitter® classes as well as Red Cross Babysitter’s Training at designated recreation centers in the month of July. Parents and guardians can contact the individual recreation centers listed below for more information. All SafeSitter® classes are free and open to the public. The Division of Recreation asks that interested participants please register in advance at participating recreation centers.
