On Friday July 12, 2013 the Cleveland Housing Network in collaboration with the City of Cleveland Department of Aging and Cuyahoga County Department of Senior and Adult Services held a special Senior Day for the Summer Crisis Program. Over 100 seniors from all over Cuyahoga County had the opportunity to apply for a window Air Conditioning Unit and/or assistance with utility bills. Sixty low income Cleveland seniors and adults with medical conditions were able to take the AC units home on Friday. Seniors were pleased to receive immediate relief from the heat. Transportation was provided by Senior Transportation Connection for seniors unable to drive. Bringing generations together, teen volunteers from Fairhill Partners assisted throughout the day.
A special focus of the day was to help seniors learn how to make the most of limited incomes. In addition to the Summer Crisis Program appointments, seniors were able to visit with representatives from utility companies and gain tips on how to lower their bills. Seniors also had the opportunity to hear Ray Odom, Administrative Manager for the Department of Aging, present information on avoiding scams and frauds that target the senior population. Benefits CheckUps were completed with each senior to determine if they were eligible for any additional programs. Many found that they could further save money by enrolling in programs including those that help with food and medical expenses. To complete a Benefit CheckUp call the Cleveland Department of Aging at 216-664-2833.
