Registration Now Open for the 2014 Water Safety Initiative

Today, the City of Cleveland Division of Recreation and the Cleveland Metroparks announced open registration for the 2014 Water Safety Initiative. The Water Safety initiative is a collaborative effort between the City of Cleveland and the Cleveland Metroparks that encourages all Cleveland-area residents to learn how to swim at their local recreation center.

“Knowing how to swim is a valuable life skill that many urban area youths, teenagers, and adults never had a chance to learn,” said Director of Public Works Michael Cox. “This program and collaboration between the city and the Metroparks will ensure that all of our residents are able to enjoy the indoor and outdoor swimming amenities throughout the City of Cleveland and most importantly, be safe.”

In addition to creating a safe learning environment and providing a valuable skill for residents at indoor and outdoor pool locations, The Water Safety Initiative encourages safety around the city’s beaches, lakefront access areas, and public parks.

“Cleveland Metroparks has been heavily involved in increasing access to the lakefront for Greater Clevelanders and now we want to do our part to help spread awareness about learning to swim and staying safe in the water,” said Cleveland Metroparks CEO Brian Zimmerman. “That’s why the Park District is collaborating with the City of Cleveland to create a ‘one-stop shop’ to access information on water safety, learn to swim, and where and how to register for these classes anywhere in the Cleveland area.”

Registration for swimming lessons at all indoor pool locations at City of Cleveland recreation centers begins Monday, June 2, 2014 and ends the week of June 16, 2014. All participants must be at least 4 feet tall and 8 years old to register.
