City of Cleveland Daily Media Update Summary Wednesday, July 20 at 7 p.m.

This evening, Mayor Frank G. Jackson and Police Chief Calvin D. Williams provided the media with an overview of actions that transpired in the event zone as it relates to the Republican National Convention.

Safety and Security Updates

  •  Cleveland Fire and multiple law enforcement agencies were on scene as demonstrators lit the United States Flag at East 4th and Prospect.
  • Flag burning is not illegal.
  • A demonstrator also lit himself on fire and those around him due to the close proximity.
  • At that point, police and fire engaged.
  • Firefighters extinguished it immediately and confiscated the flag.
  • Two demonstrators were injured trying to put the fire out but refused treatment.
  • Two law enforcement officers, one Cleveland Police and one Ohio State Highway Patrol, were assaulted and have minor injuries; as a result, two demonstrators were arrested for felonious assault.
  • Following the incident, police issued an order to disperse to secure the area and keep people safe.
  • Police also worked to separate members of the media for their protection.
  • Demonstrators refused dispersal orders and 15 arrests were made for charges including failure to disperse and resisting arrest.
  • No pepper spray was used by law enforcement during this demonstration. A fire extinguisher was used to put out the fire.
  • A total of 18 arrests were made during the incident bringing the total of RNC event related arrests to 23. (A total of 17 were reported at the 7 p.m. briefing.)
  • We are working to provide additional details on these arrests as quickly as possible and will issue updates using @CLEPolice and @CityofCleveland on Twitter.

The next media briefing will be July 21, 2016 at 10:00 a.m.
