  • Luncheon:  Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams, WWII Medal of Honor recipient

Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams, a WWII Medal of Honor recipient, and founder of the Herschel Williams Foundation is hopeful of erecting a Gold Star memorial in the City of Cleveland.   The Hershel Woody Williams Congressional Medal of Honor Education Foundation, Inc. was established in 2010 and is a charitable 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization.  The Foundation encourages, with the assistance of the public and community leaders, establishing permanent Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments in communities throughout the country and provides scholarships to eligible Gold Star Children. 

The primary goal is to honor Gold Star Families, relatives, and Gold Star Children who have sacrificed a loved one in the service of their country.

Luncheon:  a Military Recognition Luncheon will be held Friday, September 29, 2017 at the Hilton Cleveland Downtown, 100 Lakeside Avenue, Cleveland and will feature a presentation by one of four living World War II Medal of Honor recipients, Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams, USMC (ret.)

There is no charge for the luncheon, but seating is limited.

  • Veterans Mobile Outreach

Federal, State and County veterans’ agencies will be available to file a compensation or pension claim, apply for VA Healthcare, request your DD214, file and awards and other earned Veteran benefits.

  • Vietnam Combat Veterans Memorial ‘ the Moving Wall’

September 21-24, 2017 at Perry High School, 1 Success Blvd., Perry OH 44081.  The opening ceremony will begin at 7 PM Thursday, September 21 and a closing ceremony held at 6 PM Sunday, September 24, 2017. 

  • Fisher House Fundraiser

A special fundraiser to benefit the Greater Cleveland Fischer House is planned for 8 PM – midnight September 30, 2017 at the Holy Spirit Party Center at 5500 W 54 Street, Parma, OH.  The event is open to the public and includes raffles, food and dancing.  Proceeds will benefit families of patients receiving medical care at military and VA medical centers.  For details, call Barb Haselow at 440.886.6157 or Marge Smith at 216.224.4178.  Additional information will be provided when made available.

  • Ohio Airborne Days: The 55th All Ohio Airborne Days will be celebrated Oct 5, 6, and 7, 2017. For more information, contact Sean Jennings at telephone 440.915.8223 or  
  • Annual Veterans Day Ceremony and Parade

The City of Cleveland will partner and host the annual Veterans Day ceremony and Parade on Friday, November 10, 2017.  A limited number of display tables are available to Veteran support groups interesting in displaying or presenting information to the attendees.  Please contact Marty Flask at telephone 216.420.7606 or to reserve a spot.  First come, first served.   Note:  The Red Cross , VA Medical Center, USO, Homeless Veterans Outreach and VA Vet Center have already reserved a table.

Parade Registration:  The deadline for entering your organization, vehicle or float is 1 PM Wednesday, November 7, 2017.  For more information, contact Paul Tuggey at telephone 216.952.2884.

  • Save the Date:  Cleveland Military Ball

The Cleveland Military Ball will be held 6-11 PM 18 November 2017 at the Crowne Plaza at 5300 Rockside Road, Independence, OH

Did you know. . . . .

In the history of our great nation, approximately 40 million men and women have served in the Armed Forces.  Of those 40 million, just 3,516 have earned the Medal of Honor, the highest award for valor and courage.

Of those 3,516 recipients, 72 are alive today.  Of those 72 recipients, only 4 are alive from WWII. Of those 4, there is 1 Marine. 

That Marine, Hershel “Woody” Williams will be in Cleveland on 29SEPT17 to propose the creation of a Gold Star Family Memorial.
