Mayor Jackson Appoints Sharon Dumas as Interim Chief of Staff

Jackson today administered the Oath of Office to Sharon Dumas, swearing her in as the Interim Chief of Staff.  She will hold the position while the city conducts a search for a permanent Chief of Staff. Dumas will also retain her position as the city’s Director of Finance.

“I appointed Sharon Dumas as the Interim Chief of Staff because of her demonstrated leadership, dedication, and commitment to the people of Cleveland,” said Mayor Jackson. “Through her position as the Director of Finance, she has met many challenges for the City and because of her hard work and sound fiscal responsibility, she helped guide us to positive outcomes. She is familiar with the processes and procedures of city government, and is highly qualified.”

About Sharon Dumas

Sharon A. Dumas has more than 25 years of private and public sector fiscal management experience. As Director of Finance, Dumas is responsible for the City’s $1.1 billion budget which includes the major enterprise operations of Cleveland Hopkins Airport, Cleveland Water Department and Cleveland Public Power. The Department consists of 13 divisions represented by 311 employees in all areas of municipal finance and information technology.

She had previously served as the Assistant Director of Finance, responsible for directing Sinking Fund, Capital Projects and the Office of Budget and Management. She has also served as the Interim Director of Public Utilities.

Dumas began her career with the City in March, 1999 as Assistant Director in the Department of Community Development, where she managed more than 300 employees in four divisions. Shortly thereafter the responsibilities of the Commissioner of Neighborhood Development were added to her duties. In that capacity she had direct supervision for 32 employees in the sections of neighborhood planning, storefront renovation, land revitalization and new housing construction.

In 2002, Dumas was appointed Director of the Empowerment Zone, shepherding the program through a fiscal audit while continuing to direct and implement more than $200 million in projects and programs in compliance with grant regulations.

Prior to joining the City, Dumas served as Finance Director for the City of East Cleveland and District Credit Manager for LTV Steel Company, formerly Republic Steel.

Dumas has a master’s degree in Accounting and Financial Information Systems from Cleveland State University. She additionally serves as a board member of several civic and religious organizations.

road work ahead

Thanks to Mayor Frank G. Jackson’s enhanced budget, made possible by Issue 32, the City of Cleveland is embarking on more street improvement projects in 2017 than years past. Projects span all neighborhoods and wards throughout the city.

Here are some highlights about this year’s road work:

  • Street resurfacing began on April 27, 2017 and will continue through the summer, weather permitting. The first resurfacing project took place in Ward 4 on Parkview Avenue near the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
  • Potholes are serviced year round, weather permitting. The Department of Public Works has increased its pothole crews from three to 10 as a result of the passage of Issue 32.
  • This year, with the completion of the Pavement Management Study we have a graded system that allows us to select the streets that are in the greatest need of resurfacing. We are using the worst first approach to road resurfacing.
  • We are projecting to resurface 95 streets this year.
  • Thanks to Issue 32 funds, the City of Cleveland has reinstated street sweeping services.
  • Leaf pick-up service has also been reactivated in designated high leaf generation areas. View maps and a list of locations here.
