Mayor Frank G. Jackson, Director of Public Safety Michael McGrath and Cleveland Division of Police Chief Calvin D. Williams announce that Patrol Officer Alan Buford has been terminated from employment with the Cleveland Division of Police today, Dec. 28, 2017.

On March 19, 2015, Patrol Officer Alan Buford was involved in an officer involved shooting at the Parkwood Grocery at 1077 Parkwood Rd. wherein he and his partner responded to a call for a male breaking into a store. During the course of this incident, Patrol Officer Alan Buford did fire his weapon and the male suspect died as a result.

The case was investigated by the Cleveland Division of Police and Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office and as a result, facts were presented to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office and Buford was charged with Negligent Homicide, A misdemeanor of the first degree. Buford was later acquitted in Cleveland Municipal Court.

After the adjudication of the criminal case, an administrative review of the incident was completed and the findings presented to the Director of Public Safety who conducted a pre-disciplinary hearing. After the pre-disciplinary hearing, Director of Public Safety Michael McGrath found that Patrol Officer Alan Buford did violate the Cleveland Division of Police Use of Force Policy by using force greater than what was necessary during the incident.
