Division of Fire Responds to W. 6th Incident, Asks Public to Avoid Area

UPDATED 5:50 p.m., 1-7-18:

Cleveland Division of Fire closed a portion of West 6th Street Sunday afternoon when a fire and gas line rupture were discovered in the basement of a building.

A ruptured gas line was ignited and pushing fire into the basement of the three-story building. Sprinklers controlled most of the fire in the basement, but the gas fire ignited the ceiling and floor above the sprinklers.

No injuries were reported and the fire has been extinguished. Two mayday calls went out for firefighters who were helped out of the building but sustained no serious injuries. One fell through a floor and one had run out of air in the building.

Cleveland Fire responded with seven engines, four trucks, two Rescue Squads, three Battalion Chiefs, a Hazmat team, the Assistant Chief, Executive Officer and Chief Angelo Calvillo.
