Mayor Frank G. Jackson today administered the oath of office to the new Director of Community Development, Tania Menesse, at Cleveland City Hall.
“Tania Menesse comes to the City of Cleveland with years of experience in the public and private sector,” said Mayor Jackson. “Her broad range of experience and her educational background are the right fit for this position.”
Menesse will lead the Department of Community Development (CD) and manage its daily operations. The director’s duties include managing the Office of Fair Housing and Consumer Affairs which enforces Cleveland’s Consumer Protection Code as well as state and federal consumer protection laws. Her roles also include educating the public regarding scams and fraudulent business practices. She will also oversee public neighborhood forums, work with private and government consumer agencies and interact with various levels of government.
Menesse served most recently as the Director of Economic Development for the City of Shaker Heights. Since 2010 she was responsible for generating commercial revenue and incentivizing private investment, as well as supporting reinvestment in residential properties through both technical and financial assets.
She began her career in 1996 with the GTE Service Corporation in Irving, Texas. She then worked for Bearing Point, Inc. as a consultant, before moving to Northeast Ohio to join Qwest Corporation.
Menesse worked as a business development and marketing consultant for Towards Employment until 2009 when she became a graduate assistant for Cleveland State University and the Cleveland Foundation.
She also served on the Shaker Heights Development Corporation Executive Committee, the St. Luke’s Foundation Executive Committee, the LAND Studio Board of Directors, Global Cleveland Board of Directors and was vice chair of the First Suburbs Development Corporation.
Menesse holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Virginia, a master’s degree in urban studies from Cleveland State University and is certified as an economic development financial professional by the National Development Council. She was born in India and immigrated to the United States in 1977.
