On Friday, July 6, 2018, Patrol Officer Vu Nguyen passed away after suffering from a medical emergency during a police training exercise. Our hearts are heavy today as we try to understand his untimely death. Patrol Officer Nguyen served the citizens of the City of Cleveland admirably and passionately and he touched people’s lives every day with his uplifting personality.
Patrol Officer Vu Nguyen immigrated to the United States during the Vietnam War with his parents and fifteen siblings. His story is truly one that defines America. He dedicated his life to serving others. Patrol Officer Nguyen leaves behind a loving wife, two precious daughters, an extensive family, and many, many friends.
The outreach from the Cleveland and surrounding communities, including residents, business owners, as well as those outside of Cleveland, has been a support to the family. We will all keep Vu in our hearts.
Flags on City properties will be lowered to half-staff in honor of Patrol Officer Vu Nguyen until sunrise on Friday, July 13, 2018.
Vu, you are definitely going to be missed by so many of us! I think this poem is something you might have said:
A limb has fallen from the family tree.
I keep hearing a voice that says, “Grieve not for me.
Remember the best times, the laughter, the song.
The good life I lived while I was strong.
Continue my heritage, I’m counting on you.
Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through.
My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest.
Remembering all, how I truly was blessed.
Continue traditions, no matter how small.
Go on with your life, don’t worry about falls
I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin.
Until the day comes we’re together again
