The letter to the Coctails Bar complaining of too many calls to the police and demanding an action plan is outrageous. It blames the victims instead of the perpetrators. If a church or mosque were the target of crimes, would you attempt to punish or burden the place of worship? And why do you object to doing your jobs, wherever the crimes occur? Are you hoping the bar will have to close, so that the bashings will continue in a more diffuse, less patrolable area?? The bar is not conducting its business in a different way from other bars; rather the community is creating the danger by violet overreactions motivated by unjustifiable bigotry and fired by a culture of pseudo-religious hate messages from various public leaders. So for a resolution, address the community.

The bar’s action plan should be to expect from the police equal protection for its patrons, in the same manner and to the same extent that all other citizens are entitled to protection. If the community is targetting the bar, it deserves greater policing, just as a courthouse gets extra policing due to the greater risk for malcontents to seek to make a “statement” through violent acts there. If that burdens the police, preventing them from taking care of other incidents, call upon the community for assistance–they’re responsible and they’re the ones impacted by any “diversion” of resources. I would think that violent crime anywhere–particularly if motivated by hate–would of paramount importance to the police.
